MAYTAG MAMA!

Are you a Maytag Repairwoman?
A girl's gotta do to what a girl's gotta do!
~~~~~
Now, we have always been the kinda family that
says "If it ain't broke, Don't fix it".
We never just went out and bought the latest
gadget until our old gadget died its ninth death.
When I DO purchase something
I want it to be awesome!
Recently, when my 20+ year old Maytag
stopped advancing through the cycles,
wouldn't agitate nor spin, I became agitated.
Do I bite the bullet and pay $1,000 for a washer?
Add insult to injury, you gotta buy the pedestal.
Well, you can tell
what kind of pedestal I would buy.
"A girl's gotta do to what a girl's gotta do!"
~~~~~
I go to the internet, diagnose the problem,
look up the part and installation instructions!
I then remove two screws at the back of the
control panel, identify and remove the part.
I already knew how to remove the panel
by watching the "real" Maytag Repairman

 Off we go to the parts store.
I already let my fingers do the walking.
I found the best price for in stock parts.
Oh, Bob drove the car!!!!

Back home with the new part!
The phone is close by in case I need help.
I DID NOT need the phone!
Simply reverse the removal process.
VoilĂ !
She may not be the prettiest laundress
on the block but she is NOW dependable, again.
She has a 90 day warranty on her new part.

When the repairman was here last,
he told us to hold on to this gal as long as we could.
He said "They don't make 'em like her anymore.

I told Bob, "He just wants
to insure additional business".

Bob didn't believe I could do this and tried
to discourage me. However, since we saved
more than $250 (based on the parts store estimates)
Bob is a happy believer.

How about that for a DIY project?

Let me know!

You go girl! Congratulations on a job well done. The new ones aren't built to last, so I think you made a wise choice to fix 'er while you can.

Awesome job!! And it's true - they don't make them like they used to. Our repairman told us the same thing. We purchased a new Whirlpool washer & dryer in 1979 when we lived in California. In 1981 we moved to the East Coast and my washer and dryer, then 2 years old, bounced from California to New England on the back of a moving truck. They worked like a charm in our home here until about 2004, over 25 years without a SINGLE service call. That year, however, we had problem after problem, and eventually did replace them with a Whirlpool stacking unit. The serviceman said not to expect the new units to last over 25 years because "they just don't make them like they used to."

Love that you fixed yours!!

Donna

I think that's wonderful -- and your repairman is right -- they don't make things like they used to -- even just a mere 25 years ago! Congratulations!

Dearest Ginger,

Savannah Granny; YOU ROCK!
This is super and you are so to the point. They don't make 'm like that anymore. Isn't that the truth with a lot of things nowadays that you can't even repair as they prevent you from replacing a plastic part that is broken. It used to be metal, that would yield many loyal birthdays but nope, this seems to be done on purpose. Even little gadgets do tally up
But you dodged a new Maytag adoption. Celebrate it over the weekend. Have a happy one!
Love,
Mariette

Wow...kudos to you for giving back your old faithful washer new life....It will probably go for another 20 years...they truly do not make appliances to last anymore...I really think it is because they want us to buy new ones more often!...So when will you be doing the commercial...?...and hope you will not "be lonely"!!

I am so impressed. You're a wonder woman! I have a 1985 Maytag washer and dryer, and the dryer has been repaired once and the washer twice in the 27 years that we've had it. I love my Maytags! Cherry Kay

You ROCK girl! And you inspire me. Neil is like you fix it if you can. I also believe they now make things to not last long. Singer use to be the best and most dependable sewing machine you could buy but the stores will quickly tell you they are made overseas with lots of plastic and cheap parts now. I still wish I had my mom's good old machine that I grew up using. I do have my grandma's singer but have no desire to pedal my why through a sewing project. lol

Thanks for reminding Bob and us what a good woman can do…Tracy @ Cotton Pickin Cute

Now THAT'S what I call a diy project. You rock girl! You're so right about not making them like they used to. I had someone offer me $$$ to buy my mother's 30+ year old Kitchenaide mixer sight unseen.

Ginger,
Your repairmen is right! Any appliance you can fix and keep do!!! Because the new appliances we have been replacing them with (including Maytags) only last around 4 years!!! It is horrible! I have been so disappointed with every new appliance I have bought except our GE washing machine. So far so good. They are made in other countries and the parts are recalled or just faulty and they will not last at all. No matter how expensive the model that you buy. Good for you!! Thank you for joining me at Home Sweet Home!
